Vren's Sacrifice

Yay! Another scene from LoM! This time it's from Book I. That's right, the very first fic fo LoM. ^^ This is near the end of the story, where Sonic and co. have come to fight Naugus. By this time Vren, the Night Demon in this picture, has become allies with Sonic after he saved him. To make up for all the evil he had done earlier in the story, Vren defies Naugus one more time, and saves the Freedom Fighters that had been taken prisoner. Infuriated by this, Naugus hurls him into a pit of lava and Sonic tries to save him.

"Vren!" Sonic yelled as the demon stumbled and slid down the rocks leading into the boiling spring. He raced to the edge of the pit and gazed in, hoping Vren hadn't fallen into the lava. At first there was no sign of Vren, but then, when he searched more carefully along the rocks, he found his friend, clinging to a slab of quartz that hung just a few feet over the magma. Immediately, Sonic was recklessly descending the rocky slope, determined to save Vren.
"Hang on, Vren! I'm coming!"

Vren saw Sonic coming to rescue him, and suddenly the, the strangest expression came into his eyes. A sad, remorseful expression that one gets when they know they have done something terrible that could never be forgiven.
Sonic slid down just far enough to stretch out his hand toward Vren. "Come on, buddy, grab a hold of my hand!"
Vren hesitated, staring hard at Sonic's hand.
"Come on," Sonic urged. "Hurry!"
Vren shook his head slowly. "No, Sonic..."
"Huh?"
"No. I can't..."
"Vren, please! I'll help you! Just grab on!"
"I won't. This is for the best, Sonic. After all I've done to you in the past, this is what I deserve."

Vren does eventually fall. But don't worry. He's immortal, and is simply reborn as a good demon. ^^
